FREQUENTLY asked questions…

Leopard Creek’s main entrance is mere 200m from the Malelane Gate to the world-famous Kruger National Park. The KNP stretches about 355 km north from Leopard Creek, and is 65 km in width on average, covering a staggering 19,455 km2 – the size of some small countries.

Leopard Creek has a limited amount of tee times available for visitors to play per day, in off-peak periods, predominantly weekdays (MON, WED, THURS and some SUNDAYs after 11h00) – *excluding South African holidays, busy holiday periods and when we host events. To access these times, you have to stay in, and book the golf through, one of our associate lodges listed on this website under VISITORS.

Regrettably, access to the Estate is restricted to Members, their Guests and Associate Lodge Visitors who have secured a tee time per the explanation above.

The NJDC was established in 2015, in conjunction with the SAGDB (South African Golf Development Board), to create a world class golf practice facility to host golf development, for underprivileged and previously disadvantaged children in SA. The facility was constructed on a 30-hectare tract of land purchased from neighbouring Riverside Farm. It borders Leopard Creek Estate on its North, West and East perimeters. Incorporated within the grounds of the now NJDC facility are numerous practice tees, a variety of target greens, chipping / pitching areas, putting greens and a challenging PAR 3 course, all designed to offer aspiring young golfers the opportunity to develop every aspect of their game. It is without a shadow of doubt one of the most comprehensive practice facilities in the golfing world.

The two courses at Leopard Creek both have Cynodon (Bermuda) grass varietals on them. Specifically, Champion G12 on the greens, and Barbados Bermuda covering the general areas of play. These grasses flourish in the summer months, and lay dormant in the winter months.

The hottest, consequently also wettest months are January, February and March. Temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius (plus) are not uncommon. Thunderstorms and heavy rain are also possible in these months. The course plays at its heaviest (most lush green) during this period when the Cynodon grass varietals flourish.

Coldest months are July & August, which may see colder morning and evenings, but generally day-time temperatures are mild and comfortable, normally ranging from 18-30 degrees Celsius. The Cynodon varietals of grass at Leopard Creek lay dormant this time of year, leaving the courses playing firmer (drier) and appearing off colour (brownish in areas). Rain in these months is rare.

Hence, April, May, October and November are generally the best months to play Leopard Creek as a visitor to the Club.

The Alfred Dunhill Championship, is a flagship event of the DP World Tour, which is hosted annually at Leopard Creek Country Club, normally between the 15th November – 15th December. Check our website for relevant details.

There are two commercial airports in our vicinity that offer daily flights from Cape Town, Johannesburg (et al):

Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA), is just outside the city of Mbombela (Nelspruit), and about an hour’s commute from Leopard Creek.

Skukuza (Regional) Airport, is in the heart of the Kruger National Park, and about two hours’ drive from Leopard Creek, mainly due to the fact that the speed limit is only 50kph in the Park.

Malelane Airport | FAMN, which is a private airport, into which chartered / private flights only are accepted. It is no more than 15 minutes’ drive from Leopard Creek.

Leopard Creek’s main entrance is mere 200m from the Malelane Gate to the world-famous Kruger National Park. The southern border of the KNP is the Crocodile River, which also serves as the natural border between the national park, and Leopard Creek Estate. You will enjoy magnificent vistas into the Kruger National Park from the Clubhouse and Courses. The KNP stretches about 355km north from Leopard Creek, and is 65km in width on average, covering a staggering 19,455km2 – the size of some small countries.

Leopard Creek, and its environs, is blessed with a variety of wildlife including various bird, reptile and antelope species. Although not a common sighting, Leopards do traverse the Estate, and are spotted from time-to-time; more likely at night. Crocodiles and snakes are also omnipresent, and one should always be vigilant of these when on-site.

Although we border the Kruger National Park to our North, our security fencing separates us from the larger mammals including the ‘Big 5’. Sightings from the Clubhouse, and the courses, into the park, are regular occurrences.

Malaria is a concern in the Lowveld of Mpumalanga (including Leopard Creek Estate). Please consult a health-care professional for the latest advice on Malaria, and prophylaxis, as it changes regularly.

MALARIA Information

Malaria is a concern in the Lowveld of Mpumalanga (includes the Leopard Creek Country Club). Please consult a heath-care professional for the latest advice on malaria prophylaxis as it changes regularly.

To protect yourself, always use mosquito repellent (even during the day) wear light, long sleeved shirts, long pants and shoes and socks at night, and sleep under a net or in a mosquito-proof room. Mosquitos also do not like the cold so leave your airconditioner on in your room. Even if you are taking oral malaria prophylactic, you can still get malaria if you are bitten by an infected anopheles mosquito, so a good repellent is your easiest and most effective precaution.

If you do decide to take malaria prophylaxis, it is essential to take the drugs according to the directions on the package insert. You need to start a week or two before entering the malaria-endemic area and it is also essential that you continue to take the drugs for four weeks after leaving the malaria risk area. Please consult your physician or a registered health-care professional about the possible side-effects of the drugs.

If you are pregnant it is advisable to avoid malaria areas but you can still have a great holiday (including some excellent game viewing) without setting a foot in a malaria-endemic area. Some medical conditions are contra-indications for malaria prophylactic drugs, so consult your regular doctor if you have any pre-existing conditions.

It is important to note that a person may still contract malaria even though all precautionary measures have been taken. If any flu-like symptoms namely, headache, fever, muscular and joint pains, sweating, shivering attacks, nausea, diarrhoea and fatigue occur after a visit to a malaria risk area (and for up to six months there-after) consult a doctor immediately and advise the doctor of your visit to the malaria area in order to ensure that malaria is diagnosed and treated in time. Malaria attacks can occur up to six months after leaving a malaria area.
